Triple Bunk Beds
September 8th, 2009Modern Triple Bunk Beds are the ideal solution for people who need to optimize space for sleep, study and storage. They are a far cry from the vertical triple bunk beds that are synonymous with dormitories and other institutions. Bunk bed manufacturers recognized the need for people to conserve space but at the same time not compromise on style and elegance. They have listened to what the consumer wants and have designed triple bunk beds that are compact without being cramped, strong enough to withstand everyday wear and maintain their appearance over the years.

- Triple Bunk Beds
The design of vertical triple bunk beds only allows for three bunks of equal size. Today’s triple bunk beds are L-shaped with the “L” being formed by two lofted bunks and the third bunk is then on the ground directly underneath one of the lofted bunks. There are various combinations of twin and full size bunks providing the consumer a wider choice of possibilities. Recognizing the need to not only optimize sleeping space but to provide organized and comfortable areas for study and play the manufacturers have designed complete bedroom solutions including add-on desks and storage drawers.
Irrespective of whether you are looking for triple bunk beds for students or younger children you are sure to find a set that will meet your requirements. Some of these sets even give you the option of adding a fourth sleeping area by adding a trundle bed underneath the ground bunk.
If your requirements for a triple bunk bed includes sleeping accommodation for the occasional guest or sleep-over then you may want to consider opting for a double bunk bed that makes provision for a pop-up trundle bed. By doing this you will not only have a wider selection of bunk beds to choose from but this could prove to be less expensive. This is only an option worth looking at if you are not planning on using all three bunks on a day-to-day basis.

- Double Bunk Bed With Trundle Bed
Another option that works for some, but not for all is to use a twin-over full combination double bunk bed and sleep two children together in the full size bed. Depending on the children this is a more viable option than using a trundle bed on a permanent basis.
Irrespective of whether you opt for double or triple bunk beds you will need to determine the exact size of the area in which you wish to place the beds. As triple bunk beds are L-shaped you will need to know whether the beds must be right- or left-facing to fit into the proposed space. Keep in mind that placing bunk beds in front of windows is not recommended. It is safer to position the beds against a wall and any furniture pieces in front of windows tends to make a room appear small and dark.
The height from floor to ceiling must be measured to determine the maximum height bunk beds will fit into your room comfortably. The CPSA recommends a two foot space between the top bunk and the ceiling or any other ceiling fixtures. When planning the layout of your room ensure that light fixtures and ceiling fans will not be too close to the top bunk beds. If you have low-profile ceilings it is suggested that you look for triple bunk beds that allow for height adjustment to the top bunks.
It is not recommended that children under the age of 6 years old sleep on the top bunk of bunk beds. If your children are still very young you may want to consider buying bunk beds that can be separated and used as stand-alone beds. These bunk beds can then be assembled as bunk beds when the children have reached the recommended age.
Bunk beds are the ideal solution to providing your kids with more space to grow, whether it be through playing or studying or maybe a bit of both. Whether you opt for double or triple bunk beds will depend on which best meets your requirements but whichever you choose to buy it will be a worthwhile investment.
